Cisco finally decides to switch its data centers with cloud

broken image

Cisco, a renowned multinational company is considering replacing some of its 22 data centers around the world with cloud in an attempt to reduce energy consumptions and costs.

Lately, a lot of companies are moving their data centers to the cloud and Cisco is planning to join them. Many have moved all their data centers and data to the cloud and some have only moved a certain amount of data to the cloud, leaving some data still in some physical data centers.

This move by Cisco was initiated by the idea of saving operating costs. Data Centers are very difficult to manage and require a lot of energy and space to run, so it is a good idea to move to the clod and replace your data centers. Backup and disaster recovery is necessary for businesses to backup their data and saves their data from Disasters.

Cisco is not completely dependent on its data centers. According to Cisco’s CIO Jacqueline Guichelaar, they are already working with several public cloud providers for some amount of data. Which means a few portion of their data is already on a public cloud and now they want to completely shut down their data centers and move entirely on the cloud. This is a very big commitment and is not something which can be done overnight. It will require a lot of time and resources to execute this properly and efficiently.

Benefits of moving to the cloud

Although there are many benefits of the cloud lets discuss a few which drives companies (which might include Cisco as well) to move to the cloud:

  1. Cost-Effective

Cloud Storage cuts down the high costs of hardware and data centers. With the cloud there is no need for spending millions of dollars for maintenance and paying energy costs for data centers. Everything is in the cloud.

  1. Disaster Recovery

Cloud storage and backup helps a lot in disaster recovery. In an event of a disaster, cloud backup makes restoring data a lot faster and easier (provided there is a good service provider) and in return ensure business continuity.

  1. Portability

With the cloud, you can literally work and access your files anywhere around the globe. You are always connected to your work and files no matter where you are in case you need them. This in return provides security as well. Since your data is stored in the cloud, even if your system is stolen you can still access it with any other machine and wipe the data from your stolen system.

Summary

Cisco made a wise decision of shifting to the cloud. Cloud backup solutions works more efficiently than typical IT data centers and is cost effective so it makes sense to move to it. Having discussed the advantages of Cloud Storage and Backup it is understandable why Cisco is considering a permanent move to the cloud.
